Joy Hazle

From an early age I loved to draw and remember doing drawings for the other kids at school. Leaving high school I longed for greener pastures and spent several years travelling the world. This provided me with a great education and life experience which helped me immeasurably when finally, in my late twenties, I started to adhere to my true passion and embarked on a career as a visual artist. For twenty years I worked in Melbourne until moving to the Northern Rivers of New South Wales eight years ago. The beautiful subtropical nature, rich in colours, textures and shapes, serve also as inspiration in my work.

Figurative work and portraiture have always intrigued me and been the main direction of my work. The unfolding of a portrait always challenges; to capture the subjects uniqueness and imbuing the image with feeling, emotion, personality and perhaps even a history of the subject.  My strengths are draftmanship and drawing which are a feature of all my work, be it painting, drawing, printmaking or ceramic and other sculptures.

Two of my favourite portrait artist are Otto Dix, German Expressionist and Lucian Freud.

Joy graduated from Melbourne University with a Degree in Fine Art. She has been working professionally for the past 20 years as an artist. She likes to describe her work as “Contemporary Figurative”. Her favourite artists are Picasso and Lucien Freud. Other passions are music and nature.
