Dr. Noelene Lucas

NCIDENCE OF APPEARANCE ‘ENTANGLEMENT’, 2022-2024, Video installation art

Dr. Noelene Lucas is a well-known Australian video and installation artist. With a background in sculpture, she has been the chair of the Sculpture Department of the University of Sydney for 20 years, and has served as a professor at the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University. Two Australian Cultural Council residency programs in Tokyo profoundly influenced her life and artistic practice, and laid the foundation for her PhD.

She received her PhD from the Australian National University in 2006, where her thesis explored the concepts between contemporary art and Zen Buddhism by examining the connection between Dogen Zenji’s theory of time & space and video art.

Dr Noelene has exhibited in art galleries across Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, as well as in major exhibitions in Europe and Asia, including the Bangkok National Gallery.

The core of Dr. Noelene’s exhibited works is to explore the key issues in today’s society – the climate crisis – from an environmental and historical perspective. Under the premise of global warming, birds, land and water quality are the key to environmental research. All of her video works are based on an exploration of time, ephemerality and interconnectedness.
